A Brief Summation of My Feelings After the First Half of the Michigan-Penn State Game

Detroit Michigan Loses 6-3 34-17 to the Orioles Spartans

September 10, 2010 October 9, 2010

Baltimore 6, Detroit 3 Michigan State 34, Michigan 17

Well that sucked. As in, that sucked a lot. Today, we gave an exhibition on giving up runs points, as well as the phrase, "threatened but did not score". Infuriatingly, missed opportunities by the Tigers Wolverines was the difference today. The Tigers Wolverines missed three golden opportunities, stranding three runners on third turning the ball over twice in the redzone and missing a 42-yard field goal. This has been Hopefully this does not become an infuriating trend all season a trend for the remainder of the season. Because missing opportunities has will cost us a lot of games.

Even more depressingly, this is not a normal game that we lost. It was the first time Armando Galarraga pitched and Jim Joyce umped since Joyce screwed Galarraga out of a perfect game a rivalry game against a team with a fanbase that will make fun of us for it to no end for the last year because they lost to us six times in a row before their current winning streak. Well, at least everyone in the country knows that Galarraga really threw a perfect game Michigan's academics and football program are highly superior to Michigan State's. And at least our opponents fans have something to feel good about. I mean, seriously, how much would it suck to have rooted for Baltimore Michigan State for the past 15 years.

Yeah...I can't really put a bright side on this. This was an ugly, painful loss in a game we really wanted to win. This is as depressing as the knowledge that Chicago will raise a Stanley Cup banner in 29 days watching Chicago raise the Stanley Cup banner while waiting for the Red Wings game to start.

Sometimes, sports just make me unhappy.

CMR RAGE!!

Ah, Michigan State. One of a very few reasons I am glad to be from New York; none of the douchebags from my high school graduated and became douchebags from Michigan State. Let’s be real here, everyone who went to high school in the state of Michigan has at least one classmate who couldn’t be saved from their sad Sparty fate. And everyone who has a “friend from State” likes to pretend that their friend “isn’t like the rest of those douchebags.” Well, tough shit kid, your high school BFF just turned into an UNACCEPTABLE turd sandwich, and you did nothing to stop them.

But wait, you say. CMR, you are from New York, how can you hate MSU and their fans so much? Elementary, my dear MMers, let me count the ways:

  1. FYS. If you are not a hockey fan, you may not be aware of this one. I saw this firsthand at Yost as a freshman, and it is seriously one of those scenes that will haunt you for the rest of your life. Shit like this is not supposed to happen in college hockey, nor hockey at any level, yet it happened at Yost, and I hope to never witness an event so egregious that every usher in the stands turns a deaf ear to the student section:
    FYS.
  2. “Our parties are better and our chicks are hawter!” Oh yea Sparty? Since your parties are so sweet, (paying for fratty ice is sick, brah!) stop crashing ours and stop trying to get me to dance with you, I can sense your inferiority complex from across the room. I also sense that I should try using smaller words too: You are rather ugly and not even clever, nice, funny, or (sure, I’ll go there) rich enough to make up for it… explain again why you deserve hawt chicks?
  3. “LOLMart Wolverines!!” Well that’s up there with Nicky Minaj calling Lil Kim trashy. Try again.
  4. “Look at how old that picture is. They had to go that far back since a wide out from U of M has caught a ball.”* What is this I don’t even? Many facepalms to you, you poor uneducated soul.
  5. “You're right. It's not a rivalry. The Spartans have won the last two games.”* I’ll say the same thing I told the troll on DB’s porst: there’s a reason no one else brags about beating two of the worst Michigan football teams in the past 130+ seasons. Congrats guys, you accomplished the football equivalent of kicking a puppy and bragged about it. If you had taken a better look, you might’ve realized it was a wolf hybrid puppy. Those mature around age three. Your bad, brah. And by the way, if winning the last 2 ends the rivalry... was there ever one to begin with?
  6. Oh and on that note State fans… you don’t get to call anyone “Little Brother,” let alone Mike Hart’s team. Stop trying.
  7. “Wow, it certainly was nice of my friend here at UM to get me and my brahs these tickets… TIME TO REPAY THEIR KINDNESS BY MAKING A COMPLETE ASS OF MYSELF!** I will pick a fight with the diabetic girl standing in her seat in front of me!”***
  8. And of course… history. My grandparents’ true disregard for Michigan State football (they’d rather drive out for a homecoming against Eastern than the MSU game, since EMU and MSU have about the same standing to them). Spartan Bob and Clockgate. Mike Hart vs Coach Dantonio. The Catch. The Interception. The chronically cheating first boyfriend of my little sister’s who I never got to beat the self-righteous snot out of and who also just so happens to root for the Patriots and MSU. The crowd of student-section-invading assclowns who tried to get me and my roommate (our average height: 5’2”) to fight them. Losing in overtime. We know any memories beyond the past two years are a scary place for you, but at least try to appreciate everything that has led to this Saturday.

Oh, and don’t let this get to your head now, Sparty, I still hate Penn State, ND, and OSU so much more than you :]

*Direct quote from a Spartan fan on a Facebook event with the “He Didn’t Know Charles Woodson Could Jump 15 Feet in The Air” picture

** Direct quote from the brain of almost every Sparty jackass in Ann Arbor for the game... not really but still.

***…yea, really.

I am Rooting for Ohio State Next Week

This is a first for me. Until now, I have consistently held two rooting interests every Saturday without fail:

1) I always root for Michigan to win. This is a given and should go without saying.
2) I always rooted for Ohio State to lose. This was secondary in importance to Michigan winning, but a loss by Ohio State made Michigan wins seem sweeter and Michigan losses easier to take.

I will break this trend on Saturday, when Ohio State plays Indiana. This is because I will be rooting for Indiana to lose every game for the rest of the season, and possibly eternity as well. This is because the Indiana fanbase is utterly classless and doesn't deserve a decent team. In addition to throwing things at Kevin Koger after he scored and chanting "Break his leg" at Denard, they cheered when Denard went down with an injury. I have never heard Ohio Stadium filled with cheers when a player was injured. In fact, I've never heard any fanbase cheer an injury to an opposing player. I didn't expect Indiana fans to be sad that Denard went down, but cheering it is utterly classless.

So I hope that Ohio State eviscerates Indiana next week. I hope that they keep every starter in for the entire game and win 87-0. And I hope that every Indiana fan who cheered Denard's injury cries throughout every game for the rest of the season. They deserve it.

*My apologies to any Indiana fans who are decent people who happen to read this post. I'm sure there are many of you. However, many of your fellow Hoosier fans are reprehensible and do not deserve any reason to ever be happy about football.

Painting With Words Refuses to Acknowledge the Haters

Optimism is a word defined by the dictionary as  1.a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome. 2.the belief that good ultimately predominates over evil in the world. 3.the belief that goodness pervades reality. 4.the doctrine that the existing world is the best of all possible worlds. The first definition describes Dark Blue perfectly. I am one of the most optimistic people I have ever met. I can find good in the worst situations. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and things always seem to work themselves out. Take this fwiw.

As I’ve read through the blogosphere these last few days I’ve noticed that optimism is not flowing freely like it should. Michigan is 3-0 yet all of these “professional bloggers” seem to find need to pick apart every little thing. So fucking what if our defense played like ass? We won the fucking game didn’t we. Craig Roh has come out and said that this kind of performance won’t happen again. Why shouldn’t we be optimistic? What can our negativity possible contribute, other then giving Dark Blue a fucking heart attack at a young age? Seriously people, have faith in the greatness that is MICH.

We play a MAC school this week in Bowling Green State University. What happens if we go out there and hold BGSU to 10 points and under 250 yards of total offense? Will everything in the world be right again? But what happens if we allow 400 yards of total offense and give up 30 points? Think about this, as long as we win the game does it really matter how poorly or great our defense plays? A win is a win is a win is a win.  Never forget that. Never forget the pain and heartbreak that is associated with 2008 and 2009. Never forget the long holiday season, where instead of gearing up to watch MICH play in a bowl game, we sat at home and rooted for Northwestern to kick somebody’s ass. Never forget the way that the last two years nearly broke Brain Cook.

This season things seem different, from the last two years. The offense seems like a complete, perfectly functioning unit. Everyone on that offense smiles, everyone is incredibly humble. Everyone is All in for Michigan. Everyone on Defense also plays with a smile. Jonas Mouton and Obi Ezeh seemed to have figured a few things out. Craig Roh is becoming a team leader at a very young age. Mike Martin has shown the ability to blow through double teams and wreak havoc in the backfield. And let us not forget the raddest dude ever, Mr. Denard “Shoelace” Xavier Robinson. The guys on the team absolutely love Denard, as does the majority of the fans and hell the media for that matter. He is the unquestioned leader of this team as a true sophomore. He is the guy who led us to a last second victory over Notre Dame, on the road. Has anything like that happened in the last two years? I don’t think so.

So what the fuck is the point of this post? BE POSITVIE. That is the point. All of the shit that our beloved Wolverines have been through the last two years, they don’t need to hear a bunch of bullshit negativity from their fan base. Support these kids in everything they do, and more importantly believe in them. Believe that they can accomplish anything. So our defense may not be the ‘97  version reincarnated. Who cares, these dudes can play and are learning at an incredible rate. This team has great things ahead of it. Believe in Rich Rodriguez, GERG Robinson, and the rest of our coaches. Believe in Denard Robinson, Vincent Smith, Jordan Kovacs, and Obi Ezeh. Just Believe in MICH and things will be just fine. GO BLUE

Painting with Words is 3-0

So I took a little bit of a sabbatical yesterday, I went off into the great unknown to watch our Wolverines play,  this time I was without any sort of internet access, and my phone was dead, so I had no way of reading the message boards, and blogosphere’s reaction to Michigan’s win. Thank the fucking lord for that. I came home today, and after putting my shit away, I jumped online, big fucking mistake. My head was already pounding for the large quantity of Jagermeister I had drank the night before. So I log onto MGo and although I was expecting some OMG DOOM stuff, I was blown (lol) away. Fire GERG? Seriously dudes, you want to fire the guy whose patchwork defense beat Notre Dame?

We won this game, we are 3-0. Everyone in the known fucking universe, knew that our defense was going to have some bad days. Yesterday, our defense had a bad day. This is  the perfect teaching opportunity for GERG and his merry band of Corches. So what if we got gashed by the UMass offense. We won the fucking game, the only thing that matters at the end of the day is the win loss record. By my count MICH is 3-0. That is as good of a start as any team in College Football history. If any team has started better than 3-0 in the first 3 games of the year, let me know.

Lose the pissy little  girl attitudes. We are winning football games, what more do you want?  Denard Robinson is the shizz and Michael Shaw had a breakthrough game. So did Darryl Stonum. Lewan cracked the starting lineup. Cam Gordon had an interception. Things couldn’t be much better. MICH

Sweetest man in the world. Congrats NARD on the perfect start. Fuck the haters

What We Learned Today

Last week, we saw Michigan's defense play decently. Not great by any means, after all, they did give up 535 yards, but decently. Against UMass, we exhibited what will hopefully be our worst defensive performance of the year. We gave up 436 yards, which is bad against pretty much any team. And we gave them up on only 12 drives, which is even worse. And when you discount a knee to end the first half, these numbers become 438 yards on 11 drives, or 39.8 yards per drive (in contrast, Notre Dame had 17 drives, good for 31.5 yards per drive including the 95 yard pass). On these 11 drives, UMass scored six times (5 TDs, 1 FG). We can't just blame the secondary for having a bad day too because UMass ran the ball 20 more times than they threw the ball and rushed for over 200 yards on the ground. And to cap it all off, UMass is an FCS team.

Just think about it, we gave up 436 yards, 217 rushing, to a FCS team. A good FCS team, perhaps, a FCS team nonetheless. That is simply inexcusable for a Michigan team. And if we replicate this defensive performance against any team in the Big Ten, we will be eviscerated.

So today we learned that when our defense has a bad game, pretty much anyone can beat us. And we also learned that it's not just the pass defense that's an issue. Our run defense was absolutely atrocious today. The offensive line regularly produced holes for UMass's RBs and our tackling was...

I don't think there's a word in the English language that adequately describes how bad our tackling was. On the other hand, there is a valid analogy:

Our tackling was as bad as our special teams play.

On the other hand, the game wasn't all bad. For instance, while our offense came out very flat, we still managed to put 42 points on the board. Denard continued to play very well after recovering from a terrible interception on his first pass, putting up 104 rushing yards and an impressive 241 passing yards on only 14 attempts. Meanwhile, Hemingway came back and contributed a 36 yard reception and Darryl Stonum had an incredible day with 3 receptions for 121 yards and 2 TDs, including one 66 yard TD on a screen pass. Meanwhile, Michael Shaw also had an excellent game, running the ball 12 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns, while also making a 7 yard reception. This is all very encouraging, especially since the offense came out playing a little shaky. Of course, this came against a FCS defense, so take it for what its worth.

The bottom line is that we won ugly. Very ugly. Against a team where we should be able to beat by double digits even if we're playing badly. We learned that our defense is shaky at best, as expected, and that our special teams are terrible, so our offense is going to have to win some games for us. Still, it was a win and we probably came out flatter than we will at any other time this year, considering that we were playing a FCS team and we won a rivalry game last week in highly exciting fashion, making a letdown somewhat understandable.

Exposed?

Well, that was bad. And embarrassing. And almost a repeat of the horror. And many other things that could involve several expletives and lost brain cells from head bashing. So was it as bad as well all thought the minute it was over? No. It was not as bad as we all thought but by no means was it anything close to acceptable.

Before everyone starts panicking, people need to remember that we were a) facing a good FCS team, so it should not have been a repeat of Delaware State and b) coming off of a large win against Notre Dame, possibly accounting for our slow start. This should not be an excuse for our poor play (and I don't want it taken that way), but it could explain a few things. Whatever the case may be, there is no excuse for the way we started and finished. Our defense looked awful and consistently played a cover 3 that looked a lot like 2008 at times. Putting it simply, our defense sucked.

So how can we pull any positives out of this? First of all, UMass is actually a good team that will probably end up being a serious contender for the FCS title. Second, this game should serve as a huge wake-up game for this team. This game will hopefully teach them to never take an opponent for granted and will also likely cause the coaching staff to prepare them for each game like it means the season is on the line. Also, our offense still looked good and we finally had a running back show up, so there's a plus as well.

So, does this spell doom for our season? Absolutely not. We're still 3-0, even with this ugly win. Should we temper our expectations? For those of us predicting more than 8 wins, then probably yes. Otherwise, 7-5 or 8-4 are still possible. In my opinion, this is Michigan just coming out flat and taking an opponent for granted, something that is not likely to happen again. If it happens again next week, then start panicking. And be happy, this is not a repeat of Appalachian State. Remember, we still won, which is the most important stat.

The Road in Front of Us

Beating Connecticut was incredibly important for Michigan's season. By winning, Michigan has set a positive tone for the year. The offense has established itself as a very strong unit and the defense showed that while it is flawed, it may not be a total disaster. Denard Robinson may have locked up the starting QB job for the rest of the year and Michigan didn't fall apart when a starter on the secondary was injured. And even better, James Rodgers, previously assumed to be the Fourth Horseman of the Secondapocalypse, actually had a great game. All in all, Michigan started the season on an emphatic note with a dominating win over a BCS team that has a shot at competing for their conference championship.

When ranking the importance of every game Michigan will play this season from 1-12, Connecticut comes in 10th.

As always, the most important game is the last game. As always, the Ohio State game will blow every other opponent out of the water when it comes to importance. If Michigan wins this game, the rest of the season won't matter that much in comparison. Lose, and we will have to endure both the immediate pain of losing The Game and the long, depressing 12 months to wait for another shot at it. The Game will always play a large role in defining the season as a success or failure. Even if Michigan wins every other game, it will be an irrepressible blot looming over all of Michigan's accomplishments.

Number two on the importance scale is Michigan State. Losing to a school that we have branded "little brother" twice in a row has hurt. Every time MSU beats us, the in-state perception of us slips and MSU's is strengthened. Losing means that every State fan on this planet will crow about it to no end, meaning 12 months of agony will ensue for anyone who lives in Michigan. And beating our rivals is a big step in bringing back the pride to our football program that has dissipated after two abysmal seasons.

Number three is Notre Dame, our rival and strongest non-conference opponent. With both historic programs having gone through some very tough times recently that has led many across the nation to question each school's national relevance, winning this game is important from the standpoint of relative perception. And after winning a classic against them last year, they'll be gunning for us as Michigan goes on the road for the first time this season.

Number four is Purdue. Every conference game is highly important this year because even though Michigan is probably not going to compete for the Big Ten Championship yet, Michigan needs to reverse its fortunes in the conference. Rodriguez is 3-13 in Big Ten play with back-to-back last place finishes and this needs to change now. Of our non-rivalry Big Ten games, Purdue comes in at number one because Michigan need to shake off the bugbears of losing to Purdue(!) twice and there's some bad blood between Rodriguez and Danny Hope.

Number five is Illinois. Illinois is important because Michigan also needs to shake off the bugbears of being humiliated by Illinois(!) twice, even though there isn't much in the way of bad blood between the programs.

Numbers six is Indiana. Indiana normally would be a very unimportant Big Ten game, but this year is different. First of all, Indiana feels cheated after their last drive was killed by a controversial Donovan Warren interception and will be gunning for revenge as Michigan will play them on the road this year. Secondly, while Indiana is less talented than us, they do match up well against us, as their strength lies in their passing game where their talented receivers will attempt to victimize Michigan's weak secondary. Winning this game would mean that Michigan is capable of overcoming its weak secondary. Losing will signal to the Big Ten that Michigan is completely incapable of defending the pass and that going to the air against us is the path to victory, which would lead to disaster.

Number seven is Iowa. After a close loss in Iowa City last year, a second crack at them will draw attention to the game. Combining this with Michigan's ability to match up with them fairly well, as they have a weaker offense than the other top schools in the Big Ten this year (OSU and Wisconsin), means that they represent Michigan's best opportunity to beat a highly ranked team this year.

Number eight is Penn State. Their is no other team in the Big Ten that has appeared to benefit more from Michigan's coaching change than Penn State. Carr absolutely dominated them, while Rodriguez has been eviscerated by them twice. Also, this is another clearly winnable game against a ranked opponent, thanks to PSU's weakness at QB.

And number nine is Wisconsin. Wisconsin absolutely destroyed us last year and looks to be able to do the same this year. Keeping this game competitive is the best I'd hope for, as they will almost certainly victimize Michigan's defense to no end. Winning would be a gift, but if we are going to write off any game as a loss, this would be it.

Connecticut was not as important as any of these games. As has already been stated, Michigan really needs to do well in the Big Ten this year and our rivalry games are inherently more important than any other games. As such, the Connecticut game comes in tenth, only beating out what will hopefully be yawn-worthy MAC and FCS games.

Michigan got the season off on a great start. Now we get to walk the long road in front of us and see what this season brings.

Preview: UConn

UConn

MICH (5-7 1-7 0-0) vs. UConn (8-5 3-4 0-0)

Its almost time for FOOTBAW peeps. Michigan’s 2010 Fuck.Shit.Up tour starts in just a few short days. First up on the schedule is the UConn Huskies. UConn is a team from the powerhouse College Footbaw conference known as the BIG EAST. What do we know about UConn? Honestly not a whole lot, but I’m sure Google will help me through this.

UConn Offense

On offense, UConn has 8 returning starters from what was a pretty good offense in 2009. This includes 4 star recruit, and former Notre Dame Fighting Irishman Zach Frazer. Why is Mr. Frazer no longer in South Bend? Well as the legend goes, he couldn’t beat out that stud Jimmeh Clausen, and decided the grass really was greener in Connecticut. UConn tends to run a more traditional pro style offense, and they definitely like to establish things on the ground first. A small Table of last years UConn offensive stats.

Passing Yards

Rushing Yards

Total Offense

Points Scored

216.5 YPG

170.7 YPG

387.2 YPG

31.2 PPG

So yeah, not bad offensive stats. Of course a lot of these stats were accumulated against BIG EAST teams, so the numbers may be slightly jaded. Oh yeah, and Notre Dame, so these numbers are most definitely jaded.

 UConn Defense

In what is becoming a reoccurring theme, the UConn Defense also Returns 8 starters (somehow I just changed my font, and haven’t a freaking clue how to change it back. DERP). Senior Linebacker Lawrence Wilson leads the Huskies defense, who in all honesty wasn’t that great last year. The UConn secondary is very young, kind of like MICH’s secondary is very young. Here is some defensive stats per rivals.

Passing Yards

Rushing Yards

Total Yards

Points given up

244.9 YPG

137.6 YPG

382.4

25 PPG

So the run defense wasn’t awful, which is why I firmly expect Tate Forcier to have his wings on and to see a whole lot of the field on Saturday.

Matchups

Since you already know all about the Michigan football team, we’re going to skip over that, and I’ll grade each position group on the field, and then give you my expected final score.

Position

Mich

UConn

Advantage

QB

B

B

Push, I think Michigan has the advantage here, but if Denard is still unproven and we are still very young

RB

B+

B+

UConn’s Todman is a very good back, Again this is a push, mostly because other then Shaw Michigan’s running backs are largely unproven

WR/TE

A

C

I think the WR/TE position is one of Michigan’s strongest, as long as the QB’s can throw, MICh will have a huge advantage here

OL

A-

B+

UConn returns 4 starters from last years team, however MICH gets David Molk back, and Molk wants to fucking kill somebody. Advantage Good Guys

DL

B

C+

I think I’m being favorable giving UConn a C+, their line is very young, and pretty undersized. Our O-Line should dominate.

LB

C+

B

Lawrence Wilson is a very good linebacker and the Sporting News picked him as a preseason All American. That in itself is an advantage over MICH

Secondary

C+(??)

C-(??)

Both of these secondary's are largely unproven, I’m  giving MICH the advantage here based on recruiting, and not so much on any sort of play.

Final Score

I think that if our O-Line can control the game, like they should, we handle UConn fairly easily. Hopefully these words don’t come back and bite me in the ass. MICH 42 UConn 17.

Rich Rodriguez and The Road to Redemption

Every day each one of us has the chance to redeem ourselves, for something we have done. Rich Rod gets this chance soon enough, to make up for God-awful 2008 and 2009 football seasons. The construction of this road has been going on for awhile, it started in 2008 with the signing of his first recruiting class, and continues to this day. The pieces are there its time to make this thing work. Can he do it? I myself think so, however I’m not Miss Cleo, I don’t have the gift of being a psychic.

However like I said the pieces are in place, if RR gets it done, he will get a loud standing ovation, from Dark Blue, along with several ridiculous posts, about how I called it. Although there is thousands of people that have called for his success, not all of them write for a well written blog. Don’t worry guys I will be your voice.
So what does Corch Rod have to do to be successful? Normally I’d use bullets here but you know what, its a time for starting over, and I’m going to do this in paragraph form. What’s the worse thing that can happen? You won’t read it, no big deal.

First of all Rodriguez has to do things the right away, THE LEADERS AND BEST way. This means no extra stretching time(really no shit?). I’m sure that all of the players know this, and doing the hard work the right way will be second nature, to these kids.

Secondly there needs to be offensive leadership. Michigan is poised to do this well, whether its Tate Forcier, David Molk, Steve Schilling, or someone else. This team is deep on offense, and some of these guys are going to have to step up and be a LEADER. I fully anticipate this team having a record setting offensive year, but this can’t be done without leadership.

Thirdly there cannot be anymore missed assignments on the defensive side of the ball. I don’t care if the top 3 playmakers on the ‘09 team are gone. If the 11 players on defense make the plays they are supposed to, fill the gaps that they are supposed to, this will be a very good football team. There is senior leadership in Ezeh, and Mouton, There is all kinds of talent. Execution, execution, execution, execution, execution …….. If this happens I have no worries about our defense.

Fourthly and lastly, what does RR have left to lose? This guy has taken cheap shots from every member of the MSM. He has had “real” Michigan Men beat him down. What else does he have to lose? He can go out there each and every week and let it all hang loose. Why not, if Michigan underperforms in 2010,  there probably won’t be a 2011 for Corch Rod. So Corch if you read this(lmao) go out there and let it fly.

Also CMR, is working on a project that is so fucking rad, I nearly had to pluck my eyes out of their sockets. When she is finished I will post it here. Also A Remy Zero Video just for fun. Cya on the Live Blogs.
